Bergmeyer is pleased to announce its design for UMass Lowell’s McGauvran Student Center was honored with a 2016 Vision Design Award by Floor Focus magazine.
The Vision Design Awards celebrate the dynamic integration of flooring and architecture in five categories: corporate, healthcare, education, hospitality and retail. Winners are featured in the April issue of Floor Focus. Bergmeyer was recognized for its repurposing of a 40-year-old concrete and brick student center as a new dining and learning commons at UMass Lowell’s South Campus.
“This project brings light and color to a learning environment that is rich and vibrant. The carpet patterns in the study area are playful – fun use of design with plank carpet and color accents. Two-story volumes and strong use of colors provide clarity for wayfinding.” – Jury quote
The renovated building, centered on the campus quad, has become a major attraction for students to dine and relax rather than seeking their meals off campus. Two entries facing the quad and large areas of glass signal the approach to this colorful, well lighted space where customers can see three levels of activity connected by atriums and a wide central staircase. The focus on UMass Lowell branding is prominent, but subtle, and the use of a herringbone design throughout the project helps embrace the non-linear layout of the building and numerous 45-degree angles.
