When Staples came to Bergmeyer with a flagship site on 5th Avenue in New York City, the design team knew the space would be a challenge. With most of the floor area and all of the sales floor for office supplies on the second level, the store would have to be “upside down.” The design team created a dramatic gravity-defying monumental stair to visually connect the floors and entice customers upstairs. Putting the stair in the most prominent corner space also gave pedestrians on 5th Avenue intriguingly framed views into the first floor sales area and Staples’ large selection of high-end electronics. Within the stairs’ two-story volume, spherical white glass pendants and a burst of Staples’ iconic red color reinforce the brand, making for a distinctly upscale shopping environment. Staples has been a Bergmeyer client since 1995. The 46 projects we have done together throughout the eastern United States and California have ranged from inline storefront spaces to pad sites, flagships, and new prototypes.
