Bergmeyer Spotlight: Samantha Goodman
Bergmeyer Spotlight is an online series of interviews featuring Bergmeyer’s professionals. Meet Samantha Goodman, LEED AP BD+C, a Designer for the hospitality team who has been at the firm for 4.5 years. Here is what she had to say during her Spotlight interview:
What led you to study architecture?
I wish I could say I always knew I wanted to be an architect, but it wasn’t something I grew up dreaming about. Even though I would draw and paint as a child, it wasn’t until I was applying for colleges that my parents actually suggested architecture as a potential major. I’ve always been a creative person and really enjoy creating things that provide purpose for people and evoke an emotion from them. Architecture enables me to do that and it perfectly combines all my passions. I’m happy I listened to my parents!
What is your favorite project you have worked on at Bergmeyer?
The Beacon Hill Peet’s Coffee & Tea. This was the first project that I was able to take more ownership of. From design input, to physically seeing each construction phase, to actually visiting the space, I was able to develop a better understanding of the entire progression within a project.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere. It’s helpful for me to try to understand the people who will be using the spaces I create when I’m designing. I think it’s fascinating how people react to various spaces, and trying to understand how people will use and see my designs inspires me. I also enjoy reading Fast Company and Co. Design articles each morning since they extend beyond architecture and provide me more insight into what people find interesting.
What hobbies are you passionate about?
I have multiple rotating hobbies. I enjoy being creative outside of the office and I’m passionate about watercolor paintings, drawing and sketching. I recently started knitting again and just completed my first blanket which I’m really proud of. Last summer I also entered the virtual reality world which has been interesting.
Currently, though, I’ve been really into live music. I find music very inspiring and relaxing, and probably go to several concerts a month. I also used to play several instruments and slowly have started playing them again. There are some unusual instruments I’m learning to play like the melodica, a free-reed keyboard instrument that sounds like an accordion.
Where was the favorite place you ever visited?
My favorite place I’ve visited was Israel. I went in 2013 on Birthright and it was such an amazing experience. My grandmother is from Israel so I was able to visit some family that still lives there. I also had the opportunity to visit Jerusalem which was incredible since it has so much meaning for so many religions.
