Bergmeyer Celebrates the Memory of Former President, David J. Tubridy, AIA
It is with deep respect and admiration that the Bergmeyer community remembers our former President, David J. Tubridy, AIA, upon his passing at the age of 76. Joining Bergmeyer in 1984, Dave led our first ownership transition in 1988, and spent twenty-eight of his over three decades at the firm leading our practice as Bergmeyer’s President. Some leaders build empires. Dave cultivated a garden. He nurtured a culture where design was a shared pursuit, where collaboration thrived, and where everyone’s contribution was valued. Under his care, Bergmeyer grew—not through ego or expansion for its own sake, but by staying human, responsive, and always tuned into what mattered most: people, relationships, and design that made a difference
Dave’s professional legacy spans a remarkable breadth of work across Bergmeyer’s wide range of markets, including the adaptive reuse of industrial and historic buildings throughout New England, corporate workplace, retail, and commercial projects, as well as the development of Bergmeyer’s higher education practice. “Dave was a driving force behind the success of Bergmeyer’s Higher Education practice, providing unwavering advocacy in creating a distinct identity for Bergmeyer in the market, and ensuring the team was set up for success at every level,” shared Principal Darryl Filippi. “Dave was the kind of leader who didn’t need to be in the spotlight to shape the future,” Principal Matt Hyatt recalled. “As his role evolved, he stepped back to make space for others, trusting new generations to carry the work forward. He focused instead on building the systems, relationships, and culture that would outlast him—quietly guiding the firm’s path with humility, foresight, and an unwavering belief that the best ideas come when you listen closely, then get out of the way.”
A graduate of Pratt Institute and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1975), Dave was a design visionary who also led with heart. He believed in service to both profession and community and was actively involved in the Society of College and University Planners and the Boston Society for Architecture, as well as in his Marblehead community, leading Marblehead’s early recycling efforts and later serving on the local Zoning Board. His passion for thoughtful design and sustainable design principles extended far beyond the office walls.
Diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia in 2015 shortly before his retirement, Dave met the challenge with courage and determination to contribute to research on Frontotemporal Disease (FTD). His legacy is profound, and we carry it with us in everything we do. We send our deepest condolences to his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, Dave's wishes were for donations to be made to MGH's FTD Unit to support the clinical research efforts of his incredible neurologist, Dr. Brad Dickerson: https://because.massgeneral.org/fundraiser/6517587
