Designing for Holistic Health Care
What is holistic health care?
Holistic health care is a whole-person approach to wellness that considers the mind, body, spirit, and emotions — not just symptoms or isolated conditions. It recognizes the deep interconnection between physical health, mental well-being, social connection, and environmental influences. Rather than focusing solely on illness, this philosophy champions prevention, balance, and empowerment through mindful lifestyle choices like nutritious eating, stress management, and movement.
Importantly, holistic health care doesn’t reject traditional medicine. Instead, it integrates conventional treatments with complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine, yoga, meditation, and personalized care strategies. At its core, holistic care supports the body’s natural healing abilities and nurtures long-term, inclusive well-being. At Bergmeyer, we believe that great design can support whole-person wellness. That belief has driven our work with two like-minded partners, Bluebird Kids Health and Habitat Health, to create inclusive, comforting spaces that foster dignity, connection, and healing at every stage of life.
Starting with Kids: Bluebird Kids Health
"At Bluebird Kids Health (BBK), holistic care begins early. These clinics were designed for children and families in underserved communities and focus on integrating physical, mental, and social care under one roof. “What we're creating at BBK is distinctive: practices located in underserved communities, a model that integrates physical, behavioral, and social care, and spaces where every family feels welcome—regardless of income or insurance.”
— Chris Johnson, CEO, Bluebird Kids Health
Our design approach makes that mission tangible:
- Inclusive seating options: Thoughtful layouts accommodate small, private gatherings as well as larger social interactions, with seating that supports a range of ages and abilities.
- Community-first graphics: Environmental graphics incorporate the primary spoken language and culturally relevant imagery to create a sense of belonging.
- Comfort and accessibility: High-contrast, durable materials and soft textiles offer both visual accessibility and tactile comfort.
- Personalized and approachable: Every design detail aims to make care feel personal, easy to access, and empowering for families.
- BBK is more than a health center—it’s a place where care feels personal, empowering, and easy to access.
Aging with Dignity: Habitat Health
Habitat Health through the PACE program, is a comprehensive holistic healthcare program designed primarily for older adults with chronic conditions. At the core of PACE is a commitment to keeping people in their communities ensuring that people remain healthy and able to live fulfilling lives in the environment they know and love. · We worked with Habitat Health to design spaces that feel like home and support both independence and socialization. These environments also offer welcoming, calming, retreat-like areas for programming and care.Familiarity through design:
Each site draws inspiration from local architectural styles and residential aesthetics to create environments that feel welcoming and home-like.
- Comfort-first materials: Residential finishes, calming color palettes, and soft textures create a sense of ease.
- Inclusive social spaces: Layouts balance privacy with opportunities for connection, using flexible group seating and community-focused design.
- Connection to nature: Prioritizing building orientation, natural light, and views supports physical and mental wellness for participants, staff, and families.
- Warm, stress-free entryways: Clear signage, accessible pathways, and welcoming entrances reduce anxiety and make every visit feel personal.
- Support for care teams: Staff spaces are designed for interdisciplinary collaboration—critical for the success of the PACE model.
- By designing spaces that feel less like institutions and more like communities, Habitat Health reimagines what care can look and feel like for older adults.
Designing for Holistic Healthcare
At both Bluebird Kids Health and Habitat Health, success isn’t just measured in metrics—it’s measured in impact. It’s about reaching the kids and older adults who once fell through the cracks and proving that accessible, inclusive care environments in underserved communities can be both effective and sustainable.
Holistic health care begins with empathy—and at Bergmeyer, we bring that to life through intentional, human-centered design.
