Thomson Place
A bold branding and wayfinding strategy transforms Boston's historic Fort Point District, bridging industrial heritage with contemporary innovation through innovative graphics that honor preservation requirements while establishing a new community identity.
In Boston's evolving Fort Point neighborhood, where 19th-century industrial heritage and significance of the Boston Wharf Company meet contemporary vision and innovation, Thomson Place emerged as a transformative placemaking project that bridges the neighborhood's storied past with its dynamic future. This landmark district presented unique preservation challenges that required every design detail and decision to be designed in accordance with the Fort Point Channel Landmark District Commission (FPCLDC) Standards and Criteria and vetted through the Fort Point Channel Landmark District Commission's approval process.
Our comprehensive branding and environmental graphics strategy centered on understanding the profound connection between Fort Point's industrial legacy and its emerging identity as a creative hub. Working hand-in-hand with the client and the FPCLDC, we transformed regulatory requirements into design validation through meticulously rendered and physical in-place mockups, proving that implementing visual impact while securing necessary approvals is a creative, collaborative, and iterative process. The most dramatic manifestation of this strategy was the bold building graphics, an innovative vinyl wrap that reads like painted signage while remaining completely removable and non-damaging to the historic brick facade. This solution allowed for in-person validation of the design with FPCLDC staff to confirm preservation requirements would be maintained, while delivering the visual impact needed to establish Thomson Place as a distinctive destination.
Beyond the initial placemaking scope, we developed comprehensive tenant brand guidelines and peer review processes, providing Thomson Place with tools to maintain community cohesion as diverse businesses join the development. This forward-thinking approach ensures that varied tenant identities can coexist harmoniously within the Thomson Place brand ecosystem while respecting the neighborhood's authentic character.
Thomson Place demonstrates how thoughtful design can honor historic preservation requirements while creating bold, contemporary statements. The project's success establishes a new precedent for creative intervention in protected districts, providing a blueprint for how historic neighborhoods can evolve without losing their soul. The result is more than signage or graphics, it is a comprehensive framework that enables Fort Point to embrace its role in Boston's creative future while maintaining the authentic industrial character that makes it irreplaceable.
